The wanigan served as both sleeping quarters and cookshack for the men who worked on the river, risking their lives to free the logs every spring. At the end of a long day on the river, the wanigan was a place for food, music, and the company of good friends.   Word History: Wanigan is apparently a borrowing of Ojibwa waanikaan, “storage pit,” a word derived from the verb waanikkee-, “to dig a hole in the ground.” Citations from the s in the Oxford English Dictionary indicate that the word was then associated chiefly with the speech of Maine.

G Herberton Evans books Canoing Wilderness Waters and Canoe Camping have some information on traditional wooden construction wanigans. He worked with Keewaydin Camps where a lot of portages were necessary. The size and dimensions of the wanigan they settled on is a balance of portability with a tumpline and functonal capacity.   It's not a downbeat book despite the body count of most of the main characters, many of them who do indeed have their 'last night' IN Twisted River (or at least parts of them). The central premise set up early on of Cookie and his son Danny being on the run from the Twisted River Sheriff who understandably wants to kill them is a slow burn affair.

Marvin Kent Curtis (Octo – Decem ) was an American novelist, illustrator, composer, yachtsman, and served in World War I as an aviator with the Royal Air Force, was shot down, reported dead, and held prisoner of war until the war's on his war experiences, he authored The Tired Captains, a novel centered on a group of World War I pilots. About Remembered for his historical novel The Tired Captains, Curtis based the work on his World War I experience as a member of the Royal Air Force. His other books include Cruises in the Sun, Drumbeater's Island, and The Last Wanigan.

I could easily listen to five or more books a week if I put my mind to it. All that time I spend waiting in line at the Bank, cleaning the house or even during my evening walks could serve this purpose well.

Jane erected two piers: Mathew’s Wharf, a commercial pier on the bay that made it possible for the ferry to dock and supplies to be delivered, and a pleasure pier on her own gulf-front property that featured both a bathhouse and a pavilion.
